Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do they carry liability insurance?
This insurance covers the physical structure of your house and personal possessions. Accidents happen on the job site. Be sure your contractor is covered.

2. Do they have a worker's compensation policy in place?
This insurance covers the employees, who are working on your home, should they injure themselves. Most homeowners' insurance policies do not cover an injury to a worker in your home. Much like car insurance, the state of Vermont requires that contractors carry worker's compensation for their employees. Be sure to ask prospective contractors about the insurances they hold before attaining estimates.

3. Does the painting contractor have employees or sub-contractors working in your home?
Sub-contractors are hired help for your job and may not be familiar with the company that has hired them. A full-time employee is comfortable with the methods that the contractor uses to correctly paint your home and will be around until the project is complete.

4. Do they provide references?
A reputable painting contractor will have a list of prior clients for you to confirm the quality of their work. Ask for references from jobs that are similar to your project's scale.

5. Have you read through each prospective contractor's proposal carefully?
Read through each proposal thoroughly. A comprehensive proposal will describe in detail exactly what is covered in the quoted price. This will help you avoid further charges for work you thought was already included in your quote.

6. What does the term "green" mean to a painting contractor?
When looking at your project, from a painter's point of view, the term "green" refers to the coatings that impact at least one of the following areas: indoor air quality (low-odor), energy efficiency or durability (painting less often equals less waste).
